UK Television Transgender Monthly Round up May 2013

Postby Ice Maiden » Wed Jun 05, 2013 10:26 am

So here we go again, what is broadcast in the UK reflects on you as a transperson. Every month it is a case of spot the positives. Almost all television featuring anything remotely associated with transpeople is negative, comical or are negative stereotypes.

High Points
Plain and simple Matthew Wright and the Wright Stuff! Channel 5.

Low points are quite simple.
Not Going Out and Lee Mack, 2 Broke Girls amongst so many others - you choose!

2 Broke Girls
'And Too Little Sleep'
02/05
E4

US sitcom about the lives of two New York waitresses in their early twenties. When Max and Caroline get a huge cupcake order with short notice, they recruit their friends from the diner to help bake with them through the night.

A small wedge of wood (a shim) is holding the stove level, one girl kicks it away and the stove tumbles over.

"You heard me say it was the 'Shim'!"
"I don't know what a 'shim' is I thought it was one of those things you say!"
"What did you think it could be?!!!"
"I thought it was a cool word blend like SHE-HIM for a transsexual! A SHIM!"
"You thought a tiny transsexual was holding up our stove?!!!"
"Yes Max I am that tired I thought a tiny transsexual was holding up our stove."

Comment

2BG is a great sitcom, its very well written, fast paced, diverse'ish' and has its moments.

However, I just do not think they have the transgender issues together properly. They have used a number of trans stereotypes for laughs already - search our forums. This is just another laugh at a transsexual (in this instance) gag without one being present.

Its OK, the trans community can tak a joke, but there is rarely any balance, if the transsexual was actually a transsexual person in RL and worked as a chef and they made that joke, there would be the opportunity for rebuttal. In this there is none, so sadly another 'throw-away' laugh at a transperson's expense.

And SHIM? Seriously? Adding the word 'Cool' to the dialogue doesn't make it right. It is a work backwards gag. The writers probably knew that shims are used to block up and level cookers. Shim hmmmmm????? How can we make that funny? I know!!!! And so another transgag is spoken.

I remember something being said like this on ITV1s 'This Morning' a few years ago when Louie Spence (camp gay man hired for his 'outrageous dancing by the media) when he said about fake tan - called He-Shi... Well lets leave that there eh?

The Body Shocking Show
02/05

Not Going Out
'Conference'
03/05
BBC One

Sitcom. Lee does what he has to do to stop Lucy from flirting with the male delegates at a three-day annual trade conference in order to get herself work.

Mother - "I couldn't resist popping in to see if there was anyone you wanted to introduce me to?"
Lucy - "Anyone else suddenly going to turn up? My long lost twin? The doctor who performed my sex-change?
[Pause for laughter]

Image bbc

Lucy - "That was a Joke! I've always been a man!" "Ummm WOMAN!!!"

Comment

Straight-face Lee there wrote this gag, I suspect, so I think having her deliver the gag was a safer bet than hiim delivering it.

However, it is still laughing at transpeople. A 'sex-change' - BBC seriously?!!!

It is completely out of context, it is transphobic, a piece of dialogue created for the sole intention of mocking the transgender community and move on - sorry BBC not good enough.

It is more frustrating that the BBC are supposed to be actively working to eliminate this very problem, they have not changed. This is one of their flagship BBC ONE sitcoms! They might just get away with it were it made 5 years ago and now being repeated on DAVE. But not in 2013 as a brand new series.

It falls into the same camp as the recent Jonathan Creek episode. They just do not understand the trauma and distress that GRS (I prefer 'Genital reassignment' as sex and gender is set at birth but you may beg to differ) involves!

If Lee lived for one week as a trans woman desperate for surgery with life falling apart - would Lee Mack make that same gag?

It is this 'disconnect' that is the main problem with the BEEB - Sadly its a disconnect that gets laughs and whilst people laugh at transpeople (and crossdressing) for just existing it will never progress.

Alan Carr- Chatty Man
03/05
Channel 4

Gay Licence is at play again with the relentless transmocking comic.

He opens with introducing two comics:

"The funniest boy-girl combination since Alex Reid matched up his cauliflower nose with a pill box hat..."

Then later...

Jo Brand "I thought I'd start with my vaginoplasty routine..."

In fairness Vaginoplasty can be carried out or bio females of course (prolapse etc...) nevertheless when most think of it they tend to think transsexual women these days - but this is being very picky... More bothered by Alan Carr's constant transphobic one-liners. Alex Reid proves what happens if a transperson makes it big and then for whatever reason falls out of favour with the public, they remain the butt of transphobic gags for the rest of their life. Only the other day we mentioned that Keith Lemon (AKA Leigh Francis) on 'Celebrity Juice' was doing the same thing - in Alex/Roxanne's absence.

Thats the thing Alex is not Alex when 'en femme' she is Roxanne. But people would not get the joke then so they misgender her all the time - SORT IT OUT FFS Channel 4 (AGAIN!).

Five Children and It
05/05
Film4

Eddie Izzard does the voice of the 'Sand Fairy' in this children's adventure story.

---

Another outing for Eddie Izzard this month in

Romance and Cigarettes
BBC TWO
06/05

Comedy drama. A big, heavy-smoking construction worker is in for some trouble when his suburban wife discovers he is having an affair with a sexy but foul-mouthed English shop assistant. Meanwhile, his youngest daughter has fallen in love with the eccentric wannabe music star next door and wants to get married. But what is the difference between real, everlasting love and a brief bout of passion?

Eddie Plays a Priest.

Embarrassing Bodies
06/05
More 4

"They point and laugh and say what is it like to be a woman?"

Man with Gyneacomastia has surgery.

As many a transperson will say, "Been there - got the T-shirt" A T-Shirt rarely removed through childhood on the beach.

The 'puppy fat' defence soon gets exhausted leaving what is just abuse and shame. This relates well to FTM and unwanted breasts/breast tissue and why it is in the list.

---

The Cleveland Show
'Squirt's Honor'
07/05
E4

US animated comedy. Donna forces a reluctant Rallo to join the Freedom Squirts, Stoolbend's version of the Boy Scouts, where he soon spots an opportunity to make some extra money by selling sweets. Meanwhile, Cleveland and Donna win a romantic hotel break in a raffle, but find themselves obliged to work off their bill when they accidentally charge too many incidental expenses to their room.

Cleveland is made to dress as a hotel maid and tries to be sexually harassed by guests.

The whole crossdressed = trans = fair game to 'feel up' cycle is an unwanted undercurrent. Progamme-makers need to try twice as hard as they would with 'bio' male and female stories along similar lines. As tbh this is all they have got when it comes to laughing at our community. Stick a fat man in a dress and laugh at him...

This is lazy, in reality he would be made to wear a male housekeeping uniform - but what is funny about that?

Exactly!

---

10 O'Clock Live
08/05
Channel 4

Jimmy Carr goes easy - that's good.

HRH - BABY - When they show an image of what The Duke and Duchess William and Kate unborn child will look like and when grown up as either male or female.

Jimmy says the image of the girl just looks like the male has put a wig on and just feels more comfortable like that.

Still got a laugh but better - much better!

---

The Wright Stuff
10/05
Channel 5

Matthew Wright (winner two years running of our best presenter award here viewtopic.php?f=16&t=3450

Does a great job when faced with a potential transphobic story.

He deserves the accolades here is the dialogue.

Newspaper Headline: Boy George is a very Cross Dresser!

Boy George went into Evans clothes store for larger ladies, to try on some shoes.

Matthew - Hang on he got upset about this and you are laughing already!
Guest - he said he went in to try on some ladies shoes and the staff were very stroppy and unhelpful.
Matthew - he wanted them in size 8 - wedges. And went on a Twitter campaign to discredit the store.
Guest - chuckles.
Matthew - you are laughing again, George watches the show and would be very upset by this!
Guest - Sorry.
Matthew - and I believe that Evans are going to put things right. And hopefully he will get his wedges in a variety of summer colours.
Guest - I had to dress as a woman once in Panto and they made me go into ladies stores to buy the clothes,It was awful.
Matthew - did they laugh at you?
Guest - I just got very off looks from the staff that pointed.
Matthew - so George has a point? There used to be a shop near me call 'Transform' that specialises in transsexuals, transvestites, and George you should shop there - a huge range of stock so I am told... so I am told...

What more could we ask of a news review presenter?

Perfect!

Calamity Jane (1953)
10/05
Film4

Exuberant romcom and musical western. Calamity Jane dresses like a man, carries a gun and drives the Deadwood City stagecoach. In Chicago to fetch a music-hall star for the Deadwood's saloon-theatre, she returns with her maid by mistake. But she makes the most mistakes in her dealings with macho Wild Bill Hickok, little realising she's in love with him. Doris Day's performance of 'Secret Love' won it the Best Song Oscar that year.

Often overlooked crossdressing (both ways FTM MTF) Musical starring Doris Day - based on a true story.

---

Would I Lie to You
10/05
BBC ONE

Lee Mack - When I was young I was to to be a bridesmaid at his Aunty's wedding.

Then he made a load of jokes about wearing a dress.

Unfortunately they chose him for this question. He got a lot of laughs about my father was my mother etc. - so thats OK then?

It was a lie btw.

---

Everybody Loves Raymond
11/05
Channel 4

Sitcom about family life in a chaotic household. Marie gets upset when she sees Ray calling Debra's mother 'mom', so Ray suggests that Debra call Marie 'mom' too.

Mother to Deborah - "Don't tell Robby but I always wanted him to be a girl!"

Gets a big laugh...

Raymond - "I may have to tell him that!"

More Laughter...

This is a transphobic reaction and in part why trans kids get abuse.

The comment is fine, the laughter is not.

Why should it be funny that she could have been carrying a girl? The gag doesn't work as well the other way around, A girl who should have been a boy, would likely be seen as tough and no-nonsense.

This logic and comedy is engrained into the social psyche and propped up by the media - who will not let it go. This almost total reliance on abusing or exploiting transgender/crossdressing for financial gain (and laughter) is like a disease there seems to be no cure for.

Let's compare it with a comment like, "I always thought I was carrying a child with Down Syndrome..." Then there would be an awkward silence, does the viewer Laugh or not..? As people understand that is not a choice. And to laugh AT a child with a disability is outrageous. Trans deserve the same respect - few if anyone choose to be trans. They may choose to crossdress to make money (sex or entertainment) - but that is not the same.

---

Trivia - When Hayley in Coronation St first came out to Roy she said she was a not a female by birth but by choice.

This is not a choice for the majority so a questionable an long-lasting comment.

Models, Misfits & Mayhem
09/05
ITV2

Reality series set at the London School of Modelling. The school hosts a casting which leads to revolt in the ranks, and Danni and Matt's romance continues to grow. [SL]

More from Toni the trans Runner.

Watson & Oliver - Series 2 - Episode 3
09/05
BBC TWO

Ingrid Oliver and Lorna Watson star in more character comedy sketches.

Prime Minister Frances invents a war, Susan has a bit of a problem with a wasp, Bea and Fi have a bit of a problem with a Take That calendar and a rodent control operative shows her more sensitive side. Plus a warrior from the future has a warning about tea.

"Tranny Shop" Gag.

She stands there with a new dress and says, "is it too this..." "does it make me look..." that to her girlfriend.

"Does it look... Too see through?"
"Too Pancake bum?"
"Too I bought this from a Tranny Shop?!!!"

BBC at their best (That's a joke by the way this is terrible!).

Have I Got News for You
10/05
BBC ONE

A recent portrait of the queen here http://metrouk2.files.wordpress.com/201 ... 822&crop=1 has been seized upon more than once in comedy describing it as a man and laughing.
Others have used DAVID WALLIAMS as a stooge, this is also known as a term I coined called 'transproxy' - in other words its easier to abuse a person pretending to be trans (guilt free transphobia for the same laugh) than it is to abuse a transperson directly. This questions the whole crossdressing for laughs culture.

Embarrassing Bodies
13/05
More 4

The medical series that destigmatises unusual ailments. Doctors Christian, Dawn and Pixie address the 132 per cent rise in hospital cases in Magaluf that have resulted from partying and drinking. Dr Christian discusses the importance of safe sex, while Dr Pixie dispenses skin advice to tourists enjoying the sun. Back in the UK, Dr Pixie helps a man through dramatic penis surgery and Dr Dawn treats a woman whose eyes are drifting apart.

Man has a phalloplasty - not trans but same technique - very good!

Although I wonder if her had to attend a gender clinic for 2 years before they would do it?

Probably not and suggests trans are not equal to others.

Unsafe Sex in the City

10 O'Clock Live
15/05
Channel 4

Live comedy and current affairs show hosted by David Mitchell, Jimmy Carr, Charlie Brooker and Lauren Laverne. Each week the hosts present an intelligent, informative and funny take on the world of current affairs, via a mix of debates, interviews, topical comedy, investigations and opinion pieces. They are joined by the finest and sharpest minds from comedy, politics, science and culture - all live, in front of a studio audience.

Sadly Jimmy Carr quickly returned to the trans gag in this when viewing a camp singer at the Eurovision Song Contest hopefuls.

Jimmy Carr - "I am no music critic but there was a gender reassignment about halfway through that song."
David Mitchel - "that's what so clever about it!"

---

Models, Misfits & Mayhem
16/05
ITV2

Another chance to see the debut of Jackie Green (the young transwoman who went on to Miss UK qualifiers).

It was interesting solely for the fact of the scene between trans woman Toni (who works for the model agency and school) and Jackie who spoke about the challenges of being trans.

Jackie was not chosen at the end - but nor were a lot of girls. It was more important that she had the courage to do it.

Of course it helps that she is pretty and 100% passable as a female. Something even Toni remarked on.

This demonstrates the advantages of early intervention before puberty can 'damage' transpeople.

Good programme!

JAG
16/05
CBS Drama

Legal drama series about a navy lawyer who travels around the world investigating military cases. Harm defends a seaman who was wrongly convicted of murdering a transvestite hooker 22 years earlier, and Mac strives to prosecute an officer for bigamy.

Comment

Sadly the way this was played was objectifying.

---

Breakfast on Pluto
16/05
Channel 4

Drama about an Irish transgender orphan embracing a new life and identity in early 1970s London, struggling against homophobia and with the troubled Anglo-Irish political climate. Her adventures brush upon seedy Soho incidents and running guns for the IRA.

Cillian Murphy/Liam Neeson/Stephen Rea/Bryan Ferry;Neil Jordan;;

Comment

Well written and for a non-trans actor Cillian Murphy does a good job.

However, along with 'Rocky Horror' and 'Hedwig and the Angry Inch' on Channel 4 and Film 4, this seems to be the 'go to guy' film on a rotation to satisfy the minority programming - it did work a few years ago but now it is time for some new content.

The Best of Kenny Everett's Television Shows:
16/05
BBC FOUR

Part 1. 1/2. Classic moments from the five series Kenny Everett made for the BBC.
Stand by for laughs from unforgettable characters including Cupid Stunt and Sid Snot.
[S]

Comment

Kenny was a comic genius and many of the gags we see today including the presenters walking behind the cameras during filming off script were first embraced by Kenny who lifted the apron of respectability from the BBC. Using the building itself for many gags.

'Cuddly Ken's' untimely death starved us of what was to come. It would have been brilliant. Even camera crews laughing was copied by 'The Big Breakfast (Channel 4) and taken to Radio 1 by Chris Evans. Chris was a weak copy of Kenny.

Despite his cartoon characters like Goldie Hawn's "Best Possible Taste" - a title seized by Grayson Perry for his TV show (that recently won a BAFTA) Ken was of his time, and was truly 'alternative', when comics were still doing mother-in-law gags puffing on cigarettes and being racist. Only Kenny, Dave Alan, Kelly Monteith and Jasper Carrott were 'different'. A great show and worth watching.

Much copied never equaled - TRIVIA - Did you know Kenny at his wedding hired a transgender chef?

This has been written about by us before.

Quagmires father is now a transsexual woman and is invited to Thanksgiving at Peter's home.

Half-way through there is an awkward moment where one of the guest's son says he is AWOL from the army in Iraq.

At that point Ex-Military hero (in her past male gender role)

Quagmires Parent says,"Perhaps this is a good moment for us ladies to use the powder room?"

Lois responds - "You may use the yard!"

Objectification - equating transsexuality to being an animal.

He must serve time as a real-life tooth fairy, complete with wings and a magic wand. Can Derek learn how to be a better man by being a good fairy?

Comment

I must be getting soft in my old age but I did quite enjoy this film once I got into it.

Daft idea but well executed by 'The Rock', especially when he had to wear a girls fairy outfit by accident before being issued with a blue sating boys one :) and by none other than Ricky Gervais' side kick Stephen Merchant - well they needed someone taller than the rock who was also a bit 'soft'.

I think it was the fact that he played it straight - reminded me of 'Quantum Leap' when Dr Sam Beckett arrives in a body that happens to be female but behaves like a bloke,

Crossdressing for laughs is a bit of a nightmare and personally I'd prefer to see only transpeople 'own' this area - but that's most unlikely. So for now at least play it straight if you are to CD and are not trans. It was OK. If he had worn it throughout it would have become tiresome, but for a moment it was OK.

Alan Carr- Chatty Man
24/05
Channel 4

Alan Carr hosts the comedy chat show. Guests include Zach Galifianakis, Ken Jeong and Ed Helms, who discuss the third instalment of 'The Hangover'. Actors Helen Flanagan and Stephen Graham are also on the sofa, and Olly Murs performs.

Comment

Obviously the story here is Stephen Graham who was BAFTA Nominated for an award for his supporting actor role in 'The Accused' with Sean Bean as Transgender Tracie in the BBC's Drama 'Tracie's Story'.

Now Alan has not got the best track record for anything trans - 'tranny' pours from his lips like drool. However on this occasion he somehow avoided it - that's amazing! I was truly shocked he managed it. So either he has now got the message, or it was just a fluke. We shall see.

Nevertheless, When a non-trans person plays a trans role like Sean Bean. No matter how good they do it, it is the chatshows that ruin it and make a mockery of the whole thing. It is 'OK' to laugh and joke about Sean Bean - and they did, about his breasts, Alan says, "You found 'that' attractive?!" Meaning Sean Bean looked rough!

The fact is had Tracie bean played by someone like Candis Cayne, there is no way that Alan would speak about her in this way. And that is the crux of the issue. Whilst non-trans people continue to lap up the trans roles we will never escape this burden of comedy abuse.

Check out our VLOG here where we speak about this a little more bit in a bite sized edited clip!

Comment

CIA Colleague to Stan holding a gun - "Shoot my hooker's penis off!"

Celebrity Juice
29/05
ITV2

Madcap host Keith Lemon presents the hilarious topical panel show. Fashion guru Gok Wan stands in for Holly Willoughby alongside regular captain Fearne Cotton, panelist Rufus Hound and star guests Danny Jones of McFly, Lethal Bizzle and Big Brother winner Josie Gibson. Plus X Factor twins Jedward.

Comment

Repeat of an older episode - in this they use a greenscreen to superimpose a guest onto Nadia Almada's body from Big Brother.

Much hilarity ensues, as Josie Gibson asks what genitals she has got...

Something suggests to me that this was rehearsed, even if it wasn't it was calculated to use Nadia and make genital gags.

It just falls into the trap of a transsexual is a genitally focused object who has no other value than to humiliate.

It is little wonder she attempted to end her life the last time she was on our screens. All these 'little things' add up!

And the fact that Celebrity Juice Producers (Holly Willoughby's husband should know better considering his wife's day job) and ITV2 cannot see this is worrying!

Embarrassing Bodies

Not trans but the same trans phalloplasty docs did the operation, I just wonder if this guy had to wait 2 or more years to get it?

If he didn't then that's dodgy - don't you think?

The Cleveland Show

30/07
E4

Animated spin-off from Family Guy. Cleveland Jr gets a job working at the Broken Stool, but when he starts making changes to the bar an old-fashioned father-son rivalry breaks out. Meanwhile, Roberta gains a wealth rival and plots a surprise for this new 'friend' with Rallo.

Comment

Cleveland jokes about him being a trans prostitute in his spare time who swindles men out of money.

New- Russell Howard's Good News
31/05
BBC THREE

For once something positive to say about this show. As they created a nice little Eddie Izzard Vs Boris Johnson montage of daft comments they have both made over the years and imagined them saying this in the political arguments to be elected, some clips Eddie was 'en femme' on stage as part of that. But no mention of transphobia - good! Funny too.

Wonder if Eddie will win and become a trans Mayor of London - makes you think dunit?

So endeth another month of happy transempowering television - yeah right - see you next time!

Don't have nightmares - I mean there is an editor right now putting together then next transabuse.

Man [...] must count no one but himself; that he is alone, abandoned on earth in the midst of his infinite responsibilities, without help, with no other aim than the one he sets himself, with no other destiny than the one he forges for himself on this earth." - J.P.Sartre.
