UK Television Transgender Monthly Round up July 2012

Postby Ice Maiden » Wed Aug 01, 2012 10:58 am

So here we go again, what is broadcast in the UK reflects on you as a transperson. Every month it is a case of spot the positives. Almost all television featuring anything remotely associated with transpeople is negative, comical or are negative stereotypes.

High Points
Repeats of Dirty Sexy Money, My Transsexual Summer and Luke Anderson in Big Brother.

Low points are quite simple.
Scary Movie (2000) 15/07 Channel 4 - the good work C4 did with My Transsexual Summer is undone in an instant with this film.

Big Brother 2012 - Luke Anderson
As this will be on everyday for 3 months I'll simply post it once each month.

Benidorm
01/07
ITV2

A freak storm batters Benidorm and Les/Lesley has to arrange some bingo entertainment with rather unusual prizes. Reformed alcoholic Pauline discovers that her flight has been cancelled and decides that a drink might help ease her frustration. When a handsome stranger from Janice's past arrives at the Solana, she fails to notice that Michael is having his first taste of holiday romance. Meanwhile, poor Natalie is still having man trouble and Donald has some bad news.

Les/Lesley is the 'transvestite' character.

---

Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami
'Kourt Gone Wild'
01/07
4Music

Kourtney puts her best chat up lines to the test as she goes on a boy rampage, while Khloe gets asked to host a transsexual 'Khloe Kardashians Look-alike' contest!

The actual event was a drag queen event but she make quick work of using the terms 'tranny' as much as possible, as in comparing herself to one, as in people say I look as bad as a tranny!.

Gee thanks Klo and a happy new year to you too!

---

Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami
04/07
4 Music

Another repeat of it.

(Both the above are Channel 4 Channels).

---

This Morning
04/07
ITV1

'Dream Jobs' when they were young

After it was revealed that a little girl aged four has a dream job as a 'toy tester' :)

One person mailed in that their brother wanted to become Lollipop Lady.

Phillip remarked, "Lollipop man?""I mean he could have been a Lollipop Lady!"
Female Hub Host - "Maybe that was it? Maybe that is what he wanted to actually achieve?"

Nicely done Phillip and gang.

It is these little things that can so easily damage all their good work interviewing and so on.

---

American Dad
'Finances with Wolves'
08/07

'Trapped in the body joke'

---

Benidorm
08/07
ITV2

2 "Tranny" comments made.
And stereotyping transgender women as sex workers.

Benidorm
This programme has a guidance rating
Sunday 8th July 9:00pm Duration: 46 minutes

The sun is shining in Benidorm again and although Pauline is now more or less permanently drunk, everyone is looking forward to Eighties Night with special guests Bananarama.

---

Dirty Sexy Money
09/07
E4

Tucked away on E4 at 3 in the morning 3am!

Is the feather in their crown. The benchmark by what all trans drama are now judged.

Watch it, enjoy Candis Cayne's performance and despair at it already being 5 years old!

With nothing coming close since.

Again - cannot fault E4 for showing this again, but why so late?

The best transgender programme on so far this year - Luke in Big Brother apart that is :)P

---

American Dad
'Helping Hands'
09/07
BBC Three

Steve grows breasts and becomes popular so Stan joins him!

All very daft really but a lot of gynocomastia jokes (and FTM binding gags) in here so a bit near the knuckle for some sufferers!

---

Dirty Sexy Money
09/07
E4

Drama about a wealthy family of New York socialites. Six months on from the events of the first series, there are conflicting plans about how to celebrate Nick's birthday.

Features Candis Cayne - Transsexual actress more on her here.

It's a repeat but a brilliant one for our community.

Big names drama that include - TV Credits: Peter Krause/Donald Sutherland/Jill Clayburgh/William Baldwin/Zoe McLellan/Glenn Fitzgerald/Candis Cayne

---

Models, Misfits and Mayhem
22/07
ITV2

Reality series following would-be models at the London School of Modelling. In this edition, the school hosts a casting for a men's magazine which leads to revolt in the ranks. Danni and Matt's romance continues to grow, but will their relationship survive her impending trip to America? The students must dress and act like troubled celebrities.

Features transwoman Toni - The Runner who adds a bit of fun to the sometimes rather stiff show.

---

Jenny Craig Ad
11/07
ITV1

Dame Edna is at it now! But she is some sort of 'international treasure' :P

As far as I am concerned Barry Humphies Sir Les Patterson 'the other act' has never really worked (drooling wears thin after 10 mins), but shove on a dress and call the bank manager!

Again a case of a frock carrying an act.

There is one exception to all this of course - Paul O'Grady, who in the end proved he was more talented without Lily Savage.

---

Little Box of Horrors
12/07
E4+1

A show voiced by Inbetweeners Star that looks at advertising world wide - nothing new and once done by Chris Tarrent (Tarrent on TV a long time agao now!)

In this one ad shows a sexy female cop walk by and offer a mint after drinking alcohol.

He says

"To put it in perspective the beer goggles are so good she is 50 morbidly obese - Oh and a man!"

NO she isn't and this is grasping humour where there is none. How can we make this funny? Throw in a transgag!!! After all thats a mans worst fear to pick up 'one' in a bar isn't it? Transpanic playing into the fears of this and of course can often end in violence. If someone is obese or older that's more obvious.

And on E4 too - again that MOU they signed is looking shaky'

---

Little Britain
13/07
BBC Three

More crossdressing for laughs.

Repeated in the early hours of the next morning.

---

Transamerica (2005)
14/07
Channel 4

Comedy drama. Pre-operative transsexual Bree receives a phone call from an imprisoned 17-year-old-son who does not know she is becoming a woman. Her therapist insists she deal with this relationship before her final operation is approved, which leads to a road trip across America.

Felicity Huffman/Elizabeth Pena/Kevin Zegers/Graham Greene/Danny Burstein/Maurice Orozco;Duncan Tucker;;

An OK film but is this what passes for the new touchy feely Channel four and their MOU with Trans Media Watch?

Not enough - sorry.

This is not only a repeat for the umpteenth time - there is no transperson in the lead.

Nothing new here - but I suppose the best we are gunna get - for now at least.

Sadly this film's benefit was offset by showing Scay Movie.

---

QI
14/07
BBC TWO

Eddie Izzard appears on the show.

---

Models, Misfits & Mayhem
14/07
ITV2

Documentary series following students and staff at the London School of Modelling. Principal Debbie and the teachers try to turn 15 students into models in just four days. With casting agents turning up at the end of the bootcamp, the staff have their work cut out for them. The students are told that they must do a nude photoshoot, but how will they react? Plus guest designer Anoosh causes fireworks at a shoot when he has a run-in with Demetri, the school's head of hair and make-up.

Not bad, features transgender woman Toni and has featured UK trans teen model Jackie Green.

---

Mrs Brown's Boys
5/6. Mammy of the Groom
14/07
BBC ONE

Comedy about a brash Irish matriarch. Dermot suffers prenuptial jitters. Agnes tries to find out who in her family is gay. Contains some strong language. Also in HD. [S]

Not a big fan simply because the only vehicle making this 'funny' is crossdressing lead.

The Trans Black and White Minstrels of the 21st Century.

---

Talking of which followed by

Little Britain
14/07
BBC THREE

We all know what this is.

And it's legacy...

---

Scary Movie (2000)
15/07
Channel 4

Comic parody of the teen horror genre in which a group of dim-witted teenagers accidentally kill a man in a car crash then hide the body. One year later, they are terrorised by a sinister serial killer and as the body count rises, they also have to contend with the attentions of a persistent and annoying reporter and an eccentric high school principal.

Unfortunate slip-up this for Channel 4 as there is a transphobic scene within the film that tbh was worse than Russell Howard's Ladyboy Airline Sketch which the BBC apologised for and pulled from future airings.

The scene in question has Gym teacher

The girl enters the Gym Teacher's office and she is caught sniffing underwear, then she asks about intimate issues from the girl, then the girl says, "I have a terrible secret.""Well Cindy we all have secrets, the teacher then sits back in her chair and her testicles at on show, she then walks around the back of the girl with this hanging below her gym skirt and the girl screams in horror.

The gym teacher's name is Miss Man, Cindy then says, "thanks for 'b@ll', sorry(!) 'ALL' your help, I have to get back to class!"

And runs out the room.

Now all I can say is Channel 4 wtf!

---

American Dd
'Helping Hands'
15/07
BBC THREE

Stan wants Steve to be popular, but the side effect is he grows breasts.

Of course this results in him using them attract attention.

All very 'funny' unless you are someone who is bullied for gynecomastia.

---

Saturday Live
14/07
BBC Radio 4

Grayson Perry talks about Britain and its links with class and taste.

He also talked about Claire, and that today she is less of an alter-ego as it is 'safer' today to be yourself.

Interesting stuff - one 'tranny' said but it was said by him though about himself. NM

---

Family Guy
'Grumpy Old Man'
14/07
BBC THREE

Disabled cop Joe gets caught crossdressed and singing.

---

Family Guy
'Brian Sings and Swings'
14/07
BBC THREE

School teacher shows class accidental home video and he is dressed in stockings and suspenders.

---

Benidorm
15/07
ITV2

Last in series. Some of Donald's clothes are found on the nudist beach - and he has left Jacqueline a note. The Garveys gear up for Madge's bar opening. Pauline hits the bottle.

Paul Bazely/Jake Canuso/Kathryn Drysdale/Janine Duvitski/Siobhan Finneran/Adam Gillen/Tim Healy/Kenny Ireland/Elsie Kelly/Shelley Longworth/Tony Maudsley/Steve Pemberton/Sheila Reid/Hugh Sachs/Selina Griffiths/Crissy Rock/Oliver Stokes/Michael Fenton Stevens/Neil Fitzmaurice;Sandy Johnson;;

More of Tim Healey as Les/Lesley's Transvestite character.

---

Models, Misfits & Mayhem
18/07
ITV2

Last in the series of the reality show set at the London School of Modelling. A former model wanting to get her career back on track signs up for a course, but she soon falls out with her younger teachers. A girl who had a 'sex swap' [SIC] on her 16th birthday tries her hand at modelling. A spectacular photoshoot sees the students tested to their limits.

The episode that features Jackie Green (The Miss UK entrant recently) - who got quite upset at being turned down as a model. But had a frank chat with Toni the other transgender woman who works for the Modeling school as a runner.

Toni was surprised that she was trans and said how important early intervention is.

---

Banged Up Abroad_Channel 5
17/07

Crossdressing to escape the police - didn't work though and ended up in custody injured and crossdressed in a third-world prison. Not good!

---

American Dad

BBC Three

Transvestite gag.

---

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation
'Getting Off'
19/07
5 USA
The team believe they are dealing with the death of a transvestite but, during the autopsy, they find his make-up is face paint and he is actually a clown. (16/23) [AD,S]

"Welcome to 'Tranny Town! This is where the Hustlers come!"
"Yeah I can see why it is very romantic! (Sleazy damp car lot/junkyard at night - the natural habitat of the transperson in TV it seems).
"Blush on cheeks, make-up, transvestite(?) certainly fits the profile?!"
"Honeymoon suite (Knackered campervan) is across the way - anonymous sex becomes and anonymous sex crime?"

Have to be careful of these US imports.

---

The Sarah Millican Television Programme
20/07
BBC TWO

With special guest Simon Callow

Gets a laugh saying he was a transvestite in one role.

It always gets a laugh, if he were a transperson saying that it wouldn't be so funny as then you would be laughing at him!

---

Family Guy
19/07
BBC THREE

13/21. Go, Stewie, Go: Animated comedy. Stewie cross-dresses to star in the US version of Jolly Farm Review. Peter makes Lois feel bad about her age. Contains adult humour. [S]

Basically a 'Tootsie' rip-off.

---

Mock the Week
21/07
Dave (BBC)

Trapped in the body of a woman gag.

---

Mrs Brown's Boys
21/07
BBC ONE

6/6. Mammy's Miracle: Comedy series. Fr Quinn is losing his faith, Dermot and Maria are fighting, and Grandad decides he wants to watch his own funeral. Contains strong language. Also in HD. [S]

Tired anachronistic comedy which unbelievably the BBC think is worthy of BBC One peak time slot - it just shows how far they have fallen as a channel. And just how out of touch they are.

---

Family Guy
'The Blind Side'
22/07
BBC THREE

11/23 : Brian starts dating a blind girl and things get a little dicey when she divulges that she hates dogs. The Griffins install a new staircase. Contains adult humour. [S]

Stewie dresses as a female nurse.

---

Dirty Sexy Money
23/07

Stars Candis Cayne - nuff said!

---

The Wright Stuff
23/07
Channel 5

Marcus Brigstocke

Talks about the trans school girl who was not allowed to take an exam dressed as a girl. To which she took the Sex Discrimination Act to the Head Teacher which has Transgender guidance within it.

He was supportive and remarked how switched on she was and how this will be good for her future.

Again another good reaction to our award winning Wright Stuff programme
see here - Best presenter. Best Production Company Princess Productions.

"No its for me darling - for me!"

Big Laugh.

When they don't laugh we will have won!

---

Little Britain 5/6
25/07
BBC Three

5/6. A 'comic look' [SIC] at life in Britain. Emily and Florence play tennis while Kenny Craig has a girlfriend. With Anthony Head and John Culshaw. Contains adult humour. [AD,S]

Only problem with this is they talk about their male anatomy for laughs and then shower together and flirt with the men nude after the game.

This may sound trivial, but this is what creates so many problems for transitioning transgender women not being 'trusted' to use the ladies (or men's) toilets.

This is stereotyping, it reinforces prejudice and should not be on the air!

The BBC have not changed at all. And have the nerve to put their name here!

http://www.onroadmedia.org.uk/forum/top ... nd-the-bbc

I could save them a fortune with one phone call!

Throwing money at the issue is not a problem as a case of fiddling why Rome is burning!

Look at your Schedules BBC deal with that first and then when you have cleaned up your act, work on how to move forward, as until them this is just pointless.

---

Quagmire's Dad
26/07

Blankety Blank
28/07
Challenge TV (Freeview 46)

Lily Savage (AKA Paul O'Grady) presents the show from 2002.

Dunno what to say about this show I think it never recovered from Wogan and Kenny Everett bending his microphone wand in the late 80s (when it was at its height of popularity), Then Les Dawson gave it a go until his untimely death. As is the case with most things on their last legs - get a drag queen in and see if that helps? :)

It didn't and was axed shortly afterwards.

Good for Paul who went on to drop Lily and be a 'fella' and get his own prime time slots from then on. He has come a long way from sitting on the Big Breakfast bed interviewing non-entities - sorry celebrities :)

---

50 Greatest Plastic Surgery Shockers
29/07
E4+1

Unusual one this as it features Pete Burns.

They all point and make Ewww noises and he seems to have gone alone with this.

I wonder if the very fact he had Facial Feminisation Surgery was the issue more than the scarring?

Anyways moving swiftly on...

He was Number 2 by the way!

---

Mock the Week
29/07
Dave

Jack Whitehall
"The North where the men are men and so are a lot of the women."

He has made a number of transphobic comments and some recently.

It's OK we keep all the video evidence archived.

Spain

Another airing of Julia Grant in Spain.

You can see the past review here - this is on every evening for the next 5 days.
viewtopic.php?f=16&t=2930

However I am getting a bit fed up with every transwoman over 60 claiming to be the first or one of the first British Transsexuals.

This buys them currency and some sort of perceived value to broadcasters. April Ashley has done the same recently after her OBE - "I WAS THE FIRST!" no you were not!

They are not the first.

Julia Grant was the first to appear in a major documentary series in 1979 and her surgery a couple years later. But that's a LONG way from the 1950s and Roberta Cowell.
http://library.transgenderzone.com/?page_id=2408

So she is not even one of the first transsexuals in the UK as lets face it before Roberta Cowell there were transsexuals going back through the mists of time, transpeople were not invented in 1980 or even 1982 :)

Julia was not even 'one of the first' transsexuals in Britain, period. And not one of the first to be surgically altered. As even in 1980 when she first visited Charing Cross the Gender Clinic was already well established.

So broadcasters please enough with these 'firsts'...

April was the fist to set the trans community in legal limbo for 40 years - so that's something I suppose she can say she did noone else has.
