Janet Mock: How Society Shames Men Dating Trans Women

Postby thedreadpersephone » Thu Sep 12, 2013 4:26 pm

We, as a society, have not created a space for men to openly express their desire to be with trans women. Instead, we shame men who have this desire, from the boyfriends, cheaters and chasers to the trade, clients, and pornography admirers. We tell men to keep their attraction to trans women secret, to limit it to the internet, frame it as a passing fetish or transaction. In effect, we’re telling trans women that they are only deserving of secret interactions with men, further demeaning and stigmatizing trans women.

Also applies to LGB relationships where one partner is trans...

Yes you're right. But I do think the stigma is greater for straight men as social norms dictate that their sexuality is so limited. Straight men are also very under-represented in partner's support groups. I'm sure they must be out there but they aren't talking about it. :problem:

Maybe. That's not an easy proposition to test.

All I know is that of the eight women I dated before finding my partner, at least three rejected me for being trans. I suspect that a fourth one also did. Some were polite and direct, one was so patronising I had to work hard to resist replying in kind, and some just said nothing but you could tell that they lost interest the minute I told them.

The one I teamed up with 'read' me before I could tell her, but seems to accept it. Whether she will eventually lose patience about it I cannot say. I hope not, but I was married to a wife who knew about my gender difficulties before we got engaged, but still walked out on me over the trans issue. Once bitten....
