hmmm Newspaper exposing trans DIY hormones

Postby Steffi » Wed Nov 16, 2016 5:14 pm

This might turn into a pain in the ass ....... The Independant has bought some female hormones and is trying to make a big story out of it

Lesser of two evils?
Either allowing trans-people to make personal choices and risk health problems and / or taking medication of unknown provenance. Or close down an avenue of provision that has enabled desperate people to meet their needs, but which will only force them to look even further afield.
Although I chose the private surgical route my GP prescribed hormones and was of great support to me. Personally, I see no reason why the NHS couldn’t be more helpful to those who self-medicate and at least understand what is at stake for many individuals.

At least they have the sense to acknowledge this in the following statement/quote from the piece:

"The risky practice of self-medicating, or “DIYing” among transgender people is common in the UK, where waiting lists to see specialists at gender identity clinics can stretch to years."

I think that the reporters do not realise that any trans* person being prescribed hormones is just as at risk when treated by the best endocrinologists, as until they swallow them they are an unknown quantity!

The prevalence and common use alleviates the risk somewhat - drinking alcohol is IMO far more dangerous not only to the individual but to society at large on top (violence/Drink Driving/Alcoholism) - maybe they should be looking to outlaw that first?!

I for one remain quite content that there are services prepared to offer trans* people medicines they NEED! Even if it us in unorthodox ways.
