Well, the Midlands is quite a big area, so it is hard to be specific without more information about your location.

The way the system works now is that your GP will be funded by an NHS Trust. Quite often these trusts operate within county or city boundaries. You will need to see your GP to request a referral to a specialist. The system varies from there on. Some specialists accept direct referrals. The Nottingham clinic referred to appears to do this. Others, such as Charing Cross (now officially known as WLMHT Gender Identity Clinic), do not. They require a referral from a consultant psychiatrist.

Waiting lists are unfotunately several months long.

This is as good a list of gender specialists as you will get.

Your GP may not know to whom to refer you. A typical GP will only see a few transsexuals during his or her career.On my first visit we sat and searched the internet together or ideas. Fortunately he got it right. I was referred to the correct place for my region first time.

I just came out to my doctor on Wednesday 27th June and he told me to go home and have a good think about it so i made an appointment to see him again two weeks later on 11th July when i went back i told him i had thought about it and wanted to still do it and give it a try living full time as a woman and that i would like him to try and get me an appointment for the gender clinic on Saturday 14th July i received my appointment which is for September 12th, which makes it just two months from the date i asked my doctor which i think is great, this is for the Nottingham clinic so not to far to travel as i live in Mansfield.
