Hello all,
I am desperately looking for a wig online at the moment. I would much rather go into a shop and try some on for obvious reasons. It doesn't have to be human hair but I would like to buy a wig of reasonable quality. Can anyone help with recommendations? I am based in Rugby but I am going to London on friday the 2nd of Dec for my charring cross appointment. Is the clinic able to help?
Suze.
Wigs etc
Re: Wigs etc
Hi Susie,
The best thing to do is go on Yell and look for wigs. There are loads of hair accessory shops which sell wigs but not upfront as most customers are quite embarassed at having to buy one. I found a little shop recommended by a neighbour who wears a wig to cover her naturally thinning hair. It looked like a place selling trendy hair dyes, extensions and teenage bling etc but they had a little room at the back and a big choice. They weren't fazed by the fact I was presenting as male and needing a female wig... I got a good one that lasted me fifteen months; it wasn't real hair but was otherwise very realistic and cost about ÂŁ200.

Re: Wigs etc
there are some good mail order ones here http://www.transgenderzone.com/shop/wigs.htm
but sitting down in a store I think due to transpeople wearing wigs most wigstores have faced this issue from time to time.
You could call in advance and ask if they have a private fitting room.
Most mail order companies can offer a returns service for trying on as log as your head is clean or wear a clean wig cap (or use a clean pop sock) and leave the wig tags on etc.
But this is something you would have to email the company about.

Re: Wigs etc
I get mine from http://wigstoreuk.co.uk. Tracy, the owner, is very trans friendly & helpful. Unless you get a human hair wig of reasonable quality (costing hundreds if not thousands), you need to think of wigs as consumable items that need replacing every few months. Also buy two identical ones, because you can't dry them with a hairdryer, and they take ages to dry.
Wash them in cold water only with Johnson's baby shampoo (87p or so from supermarkets), or if you have more money than sense, pay big bucks for a nearly identical product like this: http://www.wigs4u.co.uk/pages/accessori ... 20products
Finally, you will need a stand for every wig. This is the one I use: http://www.wigs4u.co.uk/pages/accessori ... cellaneous. It comes apart to put into a suitcase, which is very handy.
Hope that helps,
Jane x.
