Hey everyone,
I am seeking to interview trans people (by email) about self-harm. I am looking into whether there is a connection between gender identity and self-harm. For more information, or to be a part, please email me at: the.garkain@gmail.com
Thanks, Erik.

Re: Self-harm in trans folk
Well I have never self-harmed - but know people who have.
They suggest it was for attention and not the trans issues.
I know others who felt it gave them control, control over the body that their body did not allow them to have - they knew they were men and women, but their body stopped them so they abused their body... "F*ck you body get out of that!"
Others have done this and discovered the release of endorphins became addictive and it was a 'rush' they looked forwards to. Similar to about to give a speech or going on stage on opening night. Exciting feeling and a chemical rush!
But equally many many never self-harm. So the trans issues may well be a 'null hypothesis' here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Null_hypothesis
I find it annoying that both trans characters in Channel 4's 'Hollyoaks', have both cut their arms. The transman (Jason Costello see our search bar at the top for this character) played by Victoria Atkin 2 years ago and the latest one Blessing Chambers (transwoman see banner at the top of the page and the recent weeks). Are both slashing their arms.
This does not connect with me at all. It is likely that even if they were not trans that bullying could trigger it if they had ginger hair or were obese that it still might happen. Going down the road with a bias that trans do this is a mistake!

Re: Self-harm in trans folk
In my case it tends to be triggered by anger and frustration with myself, though I can't say I've noticed a particular connection with transsexualism. If I had to hazard a guess, it's more likely to do with relentless bullying when I was growing up.
