UK Television Transgender Monthly Round up Nov 2015

Postby Ice Maiden » Tue Dec 08, 2015 12:49 pm

So here we go again!

What is broadcast in the UK reflects on you as a trans*person. Every month it is a case of spot the positives. Almost all television featuring anything remotely associated with trans*people is negative, comical or are negative stereotypes.

So if we do not list them they go unchallenged as evidence is needed to effect change! Or even give awards.

It is a thankless and time-consuming task - as you can imagine especially when a trans character is introduced ... Nevertheless rest assured someone is watching even if you can't.

Stewie - "No Brian, that is what the press would have you believe. But he's not. Bruce Jenner is a woman, an elegant, beautiful Dutch woman.

Comment

The Old Bruce Jenner gags make it more or less certain that the secret was badly kept as this was made before Caitlyn came out.

Lorraine

"Ian changed to Jan, and Jan changed to Abi." Abi Austen (AKA Jan Hamilton).

Comment

Jan Hamilton made headlines as a Captain (Ian) in the Parachute Regiment who publicly transitioned a number of years ago. The cameras followed her transition, culminating in FFS in Thailand. When she returned, Lorraine was truly blown away by her new look (we have all the videos of that time).

However, she then disappeared off the radar for some years, and now is back with her new book. She has since been working with the Military (The USA) in the Middle-East, has found love and is now promoting the book. I suppose in light of Hannah Winterbourne, Jan probably timed this very well, as if to say..."nothing new under the sun."

Nice to see her happy and back on the circuit.

Jerry Springer
09/11
Pick

You're A Girl?: Outrageous American talk show in which Jerry Springer and his guests engage in lively - and sometimes heated - discussion about relationship issues.

Comment

The title says it all. Trans*man comes out to Girl. Girl then is shocked and hostile.

---

Lorraine
10/11
itv1

Morning magazine show.

Comment

They report on Caitlyn Jenner reviewing an award at the 'Glamour Awards'. The award was 'Transgender Champion Award'.

They were more interested in her dress.

---

CSI: Celebrating Vegas
10/11
5 USA

The title of the show is the case of the Cross-Dressing Carp.

However it is nothing to do with that as it was polluted water supplies with Estrogen, and not trans* as was first thought by the detectives.

---

Question Time
12/11
BBC One

David Dimbleby presents topical debate from Stoke-on-Trent. The panelists are Sajid Javid MP, Lucy Powell MP, Paul Nuttall MEP, Paris Lees and Stig Abell.

Also in HD. [S]

Comment

A second visit to this programme for Paris Lees. You can read the first time here.

The only criticism I have is there appears to be no other transgender person capable of appearing on this programme. So it is very telling that the trans*community lacks anyone other than Paris to be chosen for opinion. There should by now be a very large pool of transgender faces to choose from. But there remains only one. Nice for Paris of course. But I think this is something that the media needs to take a serious look at. As it is tokenism. If she is the only one they will entertain...then why is that?

UK Border Force
17/11
Pick

Observational documentary series. Officers stop a Nigerian with a forged passport who insists he is 15 years old. A transgendered woman suffering from terminal cancer and with just $10 to her name finds out if she qualifies to get into the country. A criminal is caught in Calais.

Comment

Often Repeated - I only ever wonder what became of her.

---

The Wright Stuff
20/11
Channel 5

Matthew Wright hosts the topical debate show.

Comment

The read the very sad headlines of a Transgender woman found dead in all-male jail.

I am sure you have seen this reported elsewhere, so no point in prolonging a comment other than if you haven't Google it.

The reaction was head-shaking and sighs, and understandable. However, it is a serious issue that needs addressing at a legal level once and for all. Maybe the new guard of transgender activists could make their mark here?

Lorraine
19/11
itv1

Morning Magazine Show hosted by Lorraine Kelly.

Comment

In this show she interview India Willoughby, who had to lead a double life, as a woman and PR executive, but also as a man on the weekends. She recently made headlines as she was also a well known Television reporter in her male role.

Interesting and very attractive, and articulate middle-aged woman. Congrats!

---

Kaye Adams
23/11
BBC R Scotland.

Kaye Adams talks to Abi Austen, Britain's first transgender army officer, and covers the parenting issues of the day.

Comment

She has already appeared on Lorraine (earlier this month - see above). But more of the same from Abi, on her promotional book tour.

---

Jerry Springer
24/11
Pick

Outrageous talk show hosted by Jerry Springer.

Comment

In this episode we have the title 'Tranny Bomb!' and well this is all we need to see to guess where this show is going. It headed into the malicious presentation of trans*panic, to a flower wielding potential beau, who upon hearing the news about her past, immediately turns aggressive and attack what was 5 minutes before the love of his life.

---

Jerry Springer
25/11
Pick

Entitled: How Could You Be A Girl?: Outrageous American talk show in which Jerry Springer and his guests engage in lively - and sometimes heated -
discussion about relationship issues.

Comment

Basically passable tattooed trans*man, comes out to shock and horror, and of course rejection. Jerry said, "Well sometimes we have trans*people on the show and you can...well...tell...But with you, I would never guess!"

I think if we read between the lines we can examine his opinion generally here.

The desire for 15mins of fame, at the cost of dignity, and violence, and of course the message it sends out to the general public that trans*people are for the most part, users, and deceitful is unhelpful, and reinforces the acceptable face that it is OK to lash out and assault transgender people for entertainment and laughs.

Lorraine
25/11
ITV1

Morning Magazine Show hosted by Lorraine Kelly.

Comment

Eddie Izzard appears in full make-up and beardless, which was nice to see.

Eddie looks so much younger here, I think the beard had protected the skin for a few years. Eddie spoke about touring in foreign languages and about being trans* back in the day.

Good stuff, today, sometimes younger trans*people forget, that it was far more challenging 30 years ago to make a name for yourself as a performer like Eddie than it is today!

I think maybe they were just concerned that kids may not fully understand the implications of random transgender playground talk.

However, it is equally possible that a child (of theirs) is trans* and it should be taken seriously.

---

First Dates
26/11
Channel 4

Dating reality series following those looking for love in a restaurant. The daters this time include female-to-male transsexual Charlie, who hopes to use his Irish charm to win the affections of 22-year-old Charlotte.

Comment

Probably the highlight of the month.

This was a lovely encounter, they both really got on well, the young man was a true gentleman, and to be honest, this is where the role-models hide. Just people being themselves, living their lives, who pop in and pop out of our television schedules, leaving the mark of positivity. Nice to see a shift to trans*men of late as they were in the past seriously underrepresented on television.

Worth watching if you can on catch-up.

---

We finish the month with...

Ladyboy Training 2
30/11
Television X

Having passed her audition, tasty 18+ girl Holly gets it on with Keisha Kane and the handsome Paolo, who swings more ways than a Robbie Williams party album!

Comment

This term is misappropriated and only works in a Thai context. Such misappropriation even in the sex business, results in it generally wider use in the UK, on the streets and other settings with non-Thai nationals. Particularly comedy and stand-up.

Whilst as they say, a girl has to make a living... It is a shame that the general listings have this description publicly viewable. As those perusing the Television Guide will happen upon it. And pehaps use it. A slight change to this would at least make it acceptable. Also men looking for sex on television (why would they when Xhamster exists???) will more than likely be disappointed to discover that they are not Thai. So makes no sense whatsoever. Bit of an own goal, there is a joke there somewhere ;).

Don't have nightmares - see you next time with more of the same I guess?
